Antique Stone Curiosity - Thomas Becket
- Description:
A stone carving of unknown provenance. We believe this to be a depiction of the famous Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket.
Murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 by King Henry II's knights (acting independently and apparently mistakenly), Becket was sainted by both the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, and various altars and shrines have stood in his memory in Canterbury since, drawing countless pilgrims and tourists from across the world.
