Terracotta Bust - Diogenes
- Description:
A painted terracotta bust of Diogenes the Cynic.
A famous philosopher, troublemaker and advocate of simplicity, Diogenes openly mocked the conventions of Greek society. He made a virtue of extreme poverty, advocated independence from society, and searced in vain for an honest man. When offered one favour by a starstruck Alexander the Great, he replied simply with "Yes: Stand out of my sunlight."
Alexander later said "If I were not Alexander, then I should wish to be Diogenes."
