Georgian Staircase & Spindles

This fine sprung Portland stone staircase had been butchered by previous owners to accommodate carpet. Our customer's specification asked for a restored staircase modelled on that of another building featured in a magazine.

Renovation required splicing-in of all the tread noses, restoration of the mahogany banister, and replacement of the artisan spindles with ornate wrought iron in keeping with our customer's grand design.

Our biggest problem was finding enough original spindles to cover three flights and two landing sections. This would ideally have meant acquiring 50 spindles, which proved simply impossible.

As an alternative, eleven originals were sourced and, using imperial section steel, our blacksmith faithfully copied these originals.

The spindles were then heavy sand-blasted and soaked in water to rust. This blasting & rusting was repeated twice for the antiquated look. The copies are now indiscernible from the originals, and hand-waxed to beautiful effect.
